- 15 persons in hospital with injuries
Tragedy again struck along the Kara Bus Stop section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday as an auto-crash reportedly claimed the lives of no fewer than five persons.
Eyewitness accounts claimed that about 15 other persons sustained varied degrees of injury and were rushed to an undisclosed hospital where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
According to the reports, the accident, involving three vehicles, a truck with registration number KRD-12HGS; a CRV SUV; and an interstate commercial bus, occurred on the outward Lagos lane of the highway with the cause yet to be ascertained as of the time this report.
However, confirming the accident and the casualty figures to some media on the telephone, the Public Relations Officer of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said, “Five persons died in the crash while over 15 persons were injured and been taken to the hospital for treatment.
Taofiq further explained; “We have LASTMA officials on the ground and other emergency responders like the Federal Road Safety Corps handling the situation. As of now, the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained; the first thing we will do is to rescue the victims before taking the case to the police station.”
Reliable sources within LASTMA confirmed that the accident left many motorists and commuters stranded for hours because the heavy traffic jam that followed spread into Lagos, forcing some motorists to drive against traffic and ultimately making movement into Lagos near impossible.
It was also gathered that officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and LASTMA were already coordinating on reaching out to families of the victims in order for them to identify the corpses and possibly retrieve them for burial.
