- 34-year-old Polish striker celebrates birthday in style
With a brace, Polish international, Robert Lewandowski celebrated his 34th birthday in style, scoring just 46 seconds into the contest as Spanish giants, Barcelona mauled Real Sociedad 4-1 in their Sunday night La Liga match.
Alexander Isak pulled Sociedad level shortly afterward as the encounter stalemated at 1-1 going into the break. However, the second half completely belonged to the Blaugrana as Lewandowski, Ousmane Dembele, and Ansu Fati all hit the target to gift Coach Xavi an impressive victory display.
Going by the statistics, Lewandowski’s goal is quicker than any goal he scored in the Bundesliga and Barcelona’s earliest goal since Andres Iniesta struck in 43 seconds in a match in 2009.
On the night, Barcelona had a rough time in spells at the Anoeta but managed to bounce back from their slip-up in the opening weekend to secure the victory and prevent league leaders, Real Madrid from going further ahead in the early season table.
Their attack appeared much more fluid in this one, regaining some of the optimism that dipped last week.
For now, all eyes are still on Frenkie de Jong whose future at Barcelona remains uncertain with Manchester United continuing their pursuit of the midfielder.
Quite disturbing, the Dutchman did not look up to his best early on in Sunday’s game, though, as he surrendered possession to allow Sociedad’s equaliser just minutes after Lewandowski struck early.
Despite Lewandowski’s impressive 34th birthday outing, it was Fati who came off the bench to make quite an impact in the encounter with a goal and two assists earning the “kid is something special” cmments from the commentators.
Next on the plate for Xavi’s men is a friendly against Manchester City in midweek before returning to La Liga duties with a match against Real Valladolid at Camp Nou next Sunday. After that, a trip to Sevilla awaits the Catalan club.
