London Meeting: Why Wike’s Team Refused To Accept Tinubu’s Overture

Emerging details of the meeting between Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and his team with the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, indicate that there was no agreement whatsoever reached with the team of the PDP governors to work against their party in the 2023 general elections.

It was also gathered that contrary to claims by some APC leaders including Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State that Wike would work for Tinubu, there was no such agreement entered at the meeting between the two groups.

A source at the London meeting between Tinubu and Governor Wike which was attended by Governors Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo state and Ekpeazu of Abia State among other supporters, told Forefront News that there was nothing to take away from the meeting as the APC presidential candidate was unimpressive in trying to convince the PDP governors to support and work for him.

The source which did not want his name in print, specifically said that it was surprising to hear all that some APC chieftains started to spreading including those that did not attend the meeting, stressing that the Wike’s team did not make any commitment neither did they said anything that suggested that they agreed to work with Tinubu in any way whatsoever.

According to the source, this is the style of the APC candidate and his supporters in dishing out falsehood once they meet with any person of importance, adding that it was the same thing they did when Tinubu visited for President Olusegun Obasanjo which forced the former leader to respond denying what did not take place between them.

He said; “I can tell you in all honesty that any person that attended the meeting, knows that there was no agreement reached between the two groups neither was there any detailed discussions. I think the meeting was more like trying to get the thinking and or direction of the Wike’s group which was difficult to achieve”.

It was however gathered that while Tinubu actually pleaded with Wike and his team to support his aspiration in the 2023 presidential election, the PDP governors refuse to give him any assurance just as their body language clearly indicated that they were not prepared to commit themselves to the APC presidential project which they described as not being in the overall interest of Nigeria taking into consideration of the dire need to rescue the nation from total collapse.
