Manchester City Are Premier League Champs
- As Liverpool finish second in a dramatic end to 2021-22 season
The race for the English Premiership League title came down to the final day of a remarkable campaign with Manchester City digging deep to win the Premier League title.
With the eventual winners, Manchester City and Liverpool separated by just one point ahead of today’s matches, both teams were obviously not ready to entertain any slip in their respective matches.
However, it was Pep Guardiola’s men who dramatically overturned a 0-2 deficit in their game against Aston Villa to go over the line, thereby denying Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool a historic quadruple in the process.
After sweating it out to beat Aston Villa 3-2 and clinch the top-flight crown, Guardiola tried to keep the ordinary on an extraordinary final day that saw Manchester City doing it the hard way by saying; “It’s just a football game”
It looked as though Manchester City were choking on the final day of the season, as they trailed 2-0 with 15 minutes to play at home to Aston Villa; the goals coming from Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho.
But three goals in five minutes, a double from Ilkay Gundogan either side of a Rodri strike, earned the Citizens a fourth Premier League title in five seasons. It is certainly a day that Gundogan will never forget.
After sneaking off to get married in Copenhagen earlier in the week, the German International returned to celebrate the most dramatic moment of his footballing career.
It meant Liverpool, despite beating Wolves 3-1, finished second and miss out on winning four trophies this season. So far, they have secured the League Cup and FA Cup, while currently preparing for the Champions League final next week.
Remarkable scenes at Etihad Stadium
The comeback bore similarities to Man City’s most famous Premier League triumph when they snatched the title from eternal rivals, Manchester United on the final day in 2012.
On that occasion, Sergio Aguero scored a 94th-minute winner to secure a 3-2 victory over Queen Parks Rangers (QPR). While Man City scored their winner earlier this time, it was the same final result on the score sheet.
Earlier in May, a statue of Aguero commemorating that goal and his other achievements with Man City was erected, and the current squad replicated the incredible emotions of that day.
Fans charged onto the pitch at the final whistle in Manchester, with joyous scenes before the Citizens were presented with another Premier League trophy.
Dejection for Liverpool
While the Reds could end the season with a remarkable treble of cup trophies, they have missed out on the chance to win the Premier League in front of their own fans.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson told BBC Final Score after the game: “I’m very proud of the boys and what we have done. We did all we could ask for today, but unfortunately not enough. I was always confident we would find the goal we needed and we did.”
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur secured top-four Premier League finish beating relegated Norwich City 5-0 in their last match of the season. – With Goal.com reports
