Materials’ Inspection: INEC Has Nothing To Hide — Yakubu Assures
Away from the initial foot-dragging and delay in obeying the Court of Appeal order, the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, says the Commission has nothing to hide concerning its conduct of the February 25 presidential and National Assembly elections.
This is as he assured the Labour Party (LP)’s legal team of INEC’s readiness to provide all documents requested by the party to prosecute its case at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.
Speaking on Monday when he received the LP’s team of 60 lawyers led by Livy Uzoukwu, the INEC Chairman said an arrangement would also be in place for the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to work out modalities for election materials to be inspected in the various states.
He told the Labour Party legal team that; “INEC has nothing to hide. Documents available at the headquarters will be given immediately”, adding; “We are meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners today and we will discuss how other documents at the state level could also be made available to you speedily.”
In line with the Court of Appeal ruling directing the electoral umpire to allow it access to inspect the materials used for the February 25 polls, the LP’s legal team was at the INEC headquarters to discuss modalities for obtaining the said documents as part of the pieces of evidence to be presented at the Election Tribunal.
