Efforts at defeating the Boko Haram insurgency have received another boost with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) military jets neutralising scores of ISWAP terrorists at the enclave of their leader, Fiya Ba Yuram, in Sambisa forest.

Available reports indicate that the raid, which occurred at the weekend, saw the notorious terrorist and current ISWAP Leader suffering major casualties at his Sambisa fortress.

Yuram assumed the ISWAP’s leadership after the Boko Haram Leader, Abubakar Shekau, was eliminated in battle last year.

Competent Military sources said the raid at Yuram’s enclave followed credible and actionable intelligence by the Air Component of Operation of Hadin Kai, which revealed that terrorists were gathering for an undisclosed mission.

The Military intelligence source said in the process, air strikes were authorized and fully carried out on all identified locations.

“An assessment of the locations after the strikes revealed that the operation was successful, though there has been no official confirmation if Yuram was among the many terrorists neutralized in the strikes”, the source said.

In a related development, reliable sources confirmed that similar air strikes were also deployed at Tumbun Buhari and Tunbun Abuja, around the Lake Chad region, after suspected terrorists’ activities were observed in the area believed to be a training camp for ISWAP fighters.

Another Military intelligence officer hinted that; “The targets were subsequently acquired and went up in flames thereafter.

“The aftermath of the airstrikes revealed that pandemonium broke out as the remnant of surviving terrorists took cover under nearby trees which were later struck by the aircraft”.

Contacted on the development, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet confirmed the strikes as having been ordered.

According to him; “Yes strikes were carried out on some specific targets in the Tunbuns and Sambisa with varying degrees of successes recorded.”

Air Commodore Gabkwet however said; “NAF won’t however be drawn into the details of those neutralised”.  – With PRNigeria report
