President Donald Trump of the United States (U.S.) has casted doubts on the status of the new Iranian Supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, stressing that Washington was unsure who was currently in charge in Tehran.
President Trump’s statement has sparked fresh uncertainty over Iran’s leadership following his suggestion that the Iran’s new Supreme Leader may be dead or seriously incapacitated following recent airstrikes.
Trump told journalists at a press briefing that he doubted the status of Iran’s leadership, saying; “We don’t know… if he’s dead or not”.
The U.S. President further said that conflicting intelligence reports had painted a grim picture of Mojtaba Khamenei’s condition, stressing that a lot of people are saying that he’s badly disfigured… other people are saying he’s dead.
Trump also underscored the confusion surrounding Iran’s chain of command, stating: “We don’t know who we’re dealing with… we don’t know who their leader is”.
The U.S. President’s remarks comes amid growing speculation over the fate of Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not made any public appearance since reports emerged that he was injured during the wave of U.S.-Israeli strikes that killed his father and predecessor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
This is as recent intelligence assessments have suggested that the younger Khamenei may have been severely wounded, with some reports indicating that he could be incapacitated or even dead even though none of the claims have been independently verified.
Trump’s comments are likely to intensify uncertainty around the Iranian leadership structure, thereby raising more questions about command-and-control structures within the country as the conflict continues to escalate.
