National Convention: Buhari Meets APC Govs In Aso Rock
BY EDMOND ODOK – Determined to put its house in order ahead of the forthcoming presidential primaries, President Muhammadu Buhari is currently meeting with governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the State House, Abuja
Presidency sources hinted that the meeting, which has all members of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) represented, is part of efforts at consensus-building towards a hitch-free primary election.
Leading the APC Governors is the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Kebbi, Atiku Bagudu Abubakar while the Party’s National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu is also at the meeting.
Absent from the meeting is Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who is expected to be screened by the committee as a presidential aspirant
According to the insider, all eyes are on the President to give guidance on the way to go and who eventually becomes the APC’s flag bearer for the 2023 general elections.
As critical stakeholders in the APC, the Governors have always been in tow with Mr President in matters affecting the ruling party, and the choice of APC presidential candidate is already heading in the same direction given the seeming gentleman’s arrangement in which the Presidency agreed not to interfere with the governors’ choice of their successors come 2023 polls.
The insider further hinted that deferring to President Buhari’s choice of presidential flag-bearer candidate of the party may be their way of reciprocating that kind gesture of seamlessly having their picks take over at the state levels.
Recalled the President hinting that though he has a candidate of his choice, such would not be disclosed then so that the individual is not exposed to any harm.
The John Odigie-Oyegun-led APC screening committee is currently sitting at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja to screen the presidential aspirants who are expected to line out at the Eagle Square between June 6 and 8, 2022 for the primaries.
