NCC Submits Performance Report To Minister Of Communications, To Deregister Unregistered SIM Cards
BY GLORIA USMAN, ABUJA – Following the directive of the Federal Government with specific reference to compliance with SIM card registration, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), has submitted its baseline short-term performance targets report to the minister of Communications.
The Minister of Communications, Dr Isa Pantami, had directed all Agencies and Parastatals under his ministry, to submit baseline short-term performance targets report.
The NCC report which was signed by the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, contained the precise figures of improperly registered SIM cards in use within the country.
The report states; “There is an estimated nine million two hundred thousand (9.2M) SIM cards that do not comply with the proper procedures of SIM registration.
“The investigation which was carried out at the behest of the minister, has exposed for the first time in the Telecomms history of Nigeria, in precise detail, the magnitude of defaulters.”
Reacting to the report, the minister expressed concern over the security implication of the discovery and further directed the NCC to as a matter of urgency ensure that all improperly registered numbers are duly reregistered.
Specifically, Dr Pantami directed the NCC to ensure that all mobile network operators block every SIM card that does not meet proper registration standards until users comply with proper reregistration procedures.
The minister noted that the security implication of the irregularity is too grave to ignore adding that the Federal Government will not tolerate any actions or inactions that will compromise the nation’s security.
