Despite the controversy surrounding her appointment, the Senate yesterday confirmed the nomination of the Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Lauretta Onochie, as Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Board.

Similarly, the Red Chamber also approved the nomination of Dr Samuel Ogbuku for appointment as Managing Director of the intervention agency “for a term of two years to complete the unexpired term of his predecessor in office”.

Others confirmed for appointment to the NDDC Board are General Charles Ehigie Airhiavbere (rtd) – Executive Director of Finance and Mr. Charles Ogunmola – Executive Director of Projects (Southwest).

The Upper Chamber also confirmed Dimgba Eruba as the member from Abia State (representing the South-East zone), Dr Emem Wilcox Wills – Akwa Ibom State (representing South-South zone), Elder Dimaro Denyanbofa (Bayelsa State), Chief Orok Duke (Cross River) and Gbenga Odegba (Ondo, South-West zone).

Established by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2000 with the sole mandate of developing the oil-rich Niger Delta region, the NDDC’s mission is “To offer a lasting solution to the socio-economic difficulties of the Niger Delta Region and to facilitate the rapid and sustainable development of the Niger Delta into a region that is economically prosperous, socially stable, ecologically regenerative and politically peaceful”.
