NECO Blacklists 21 Supervisors, 40 Schools Over Exam Malpractices, Other Offences

BY EDMOND ODOK – The Registrar and Chief Executive of National Examinations Council (NECO), Professor Dantani Wushishi, says sanctions await about 40 schools nationwide for their involvement in mass cheating during this year’s examination.

The schools, located in 17 states of the Federation, are to face a panel soon with necessary sanctions to be meted on them as appropriate.

He also disclosed that the Council has recommended for blacklisting 21 supervisors for extortion, drunkenness and poor supervision among others crimes during the exams.

Prof Wushishi dropped the bombshell on Thursday at the Council’s headquarters in Minna, the Niger State capital while announcing the results of this year’s examination.

The NECO boss said; “During the conduct of the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination, 40 schools were found to have engaged in whole-school (mass) cheating in 17 states. They will be invited to the Council for discussion, after which appropriate sanctions will be applied.

“One school in Ekiti State has been recommended for de-recognition for mass cheating in two core subjects and one Science subject.

“Similarly, 21 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, aiding and abetting, abscondment, extortion, drunkenness, and negligence in 12 states.”

On the results breakdown, Prof Wushishi disclosed that a total of 1,376,423 candidates, comprising 706,950 males and 669,473 females, registered for the exam while The number of candidates that actually sat for the exam is 1,367,736, comprising 702,112 males and 665,624 females.

He said of the 1,376,036 candidates who sat for the 2024 Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) internal examination conducted by the Council, 828,284 of them secured credit in English Language and Mathematics.

According to him, the figure represents about 60.55 percent of the candidates, adding that other details of the results indicate that 1,147,597 candidates, representing 83.90 percent, earned five credits and above, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.

On the breakdown of candidates involved in malpractices in the internal examination, Prof Wushishi puts the figure at 8,437, which indicates a drop from 12,030 recorded in year 2023.

He said this year’s figures showed a significant reduction compared to last year, adding that; “The number of candidates involved in various forms of malpractice in 2024 is 8,437, compared to 12,030 in 2023, indicating a reduction of 30.1%.”

Urging candidates who sat for the examination to visit the NECO website to access their results, Prof Wushishi declared; “At this juncture, I wish to formally declare that the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination results are hereby released to the public.

“By this release, candidates can now access their results on the NECO website: www.neco.gov.ng using their examination registration number”.
