Nigerians Behind You – Buhari Assures Super Eagles
BY COBHAM NSA, ABUJA – President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the Super Eagles that Nigerians are solidly behind them as they step today against Burundi in the Group B opener at this year’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019) holding in Egypt.
He therefore charged the team to approach and play every match for the honour of their motherland.
According to the President, the team must lift the Nigerian flag high, and reinforce the country’s reputation of as football powerhouse on the continent.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the President said; “I will be watching, just as millions of Nigerians would also do. You have our solid support, and we will cheer you to victory.”
The President, who acknowledged that football remains a strong unifying force for Nigerians, changed the Super Eagles to provide a soothing balm to the many challenges facing the country, which the government is confronting with everything at its disposal.
“Nigerians are known for their unconquerable spirit. Show this in the group stages, and even beyond. Nothing but lifting of the diadem is good enough for our country,” the statement said.
He also urged the players to be mindful of fair play, and sportsmanlike conduct, as they strive to return home with the AFCON trophy when curtains are finally closed at the Egypt 2019 soccer carnival
