No APC Congress In Kaduna – Senator Shehu Sani
BY AMOS TAUNA, KADUNA – The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani says no congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC), held in Kaduna on Saturday, May 5, 2018.
“I am just coming back from my State where party congresses were supposed to hold, there was no party Congress”, he maintained.
Speaking in Abuja, venue of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Press Freedom Awards on Saturday night, Senator Sani said the party must reinvent itself and shun impunity if it must make the required impact in the 2019 general elections.
The lawmaker, who delivered a paper on “Good Governance and Nation Building”, however lamented that there was an onslaught against freedom of the press in the country.
He despite the laudable contributions of the media to Nigeria’s democracy, “Still, the media is been seen as the enemy. I think what you should do is to remain firm to your ethics. Do everything possible to report event as it is.”
Sani, who chairs the Senate Committee on Foreign debts, noted that in the past, news was slow to reach the readers and listeners, but the social media has changed the dynamics, adding that; “In those days we wait for a week to read analysis and wait for the day to break to read news.
“In those days, you don’t see the bodies of people dismembered. But now images are splashed everywhere on social media.”
He said that the only reason the media still remain relevant was because it is the only place you can read news without doubts.
The Senator also stated that without press freedom, you cannot have a democracy that is truly democratic, stressing that the media “have a duty to ensure the electoral body does its job as expected.”
