The National Universities Commission (NUC) has warned students and parents over certificates obtained from a list of 58 universities operating in Nigeria illegally.
The Commission in a public notice announced the list of the affected complicit tertiary institutions that are not recognised, thus not certified to operate as universities in the country, stressing that any certificate obtained from the listed universities are outrightly invalid and fake.
The NUC specifically stated that in a public notice that the listed institutions have no accreditation whatsoever to run degree programmes in the country.
The NUC notice stated; “For the avoidance of doubt, anybody who patronises or obtains any certificate from any of these illegal institutions does so at his or her own risk”.
The NUC said that security and law enforcement agencies have been alerted to take appropriate action against the operators of the illegal institutions.
The commission also said that investigations into eight other institutions suspected of running unauthorised degree programmes, have commenced.

The NUC advised Nigerians to verify accreditation status of institutions before enrolling in any of them, stressing that only duly approved universities are recognised for valid degrees in Nigeria.
