BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – The Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim has tasked Corps members to always be security conscious and responsible throughout the service year.
“l urge you to take your security very serious and be conversant with the security agencies in their respective host communities”, he said
General Ibrahim gave the warning while addressing the 2020 Batch ‘B’ Stream IB Prospective Corps members at the Lagos and Ogun State Orientation Camps.
Particularly warning them to shun night parties, lone movements and night travels, the Director General said they must only patronise designated motor parks for their journeys instead of boarding vehicles by the roadside.
Additionally, he also cautioned them against unapproved journeys, stressing that approval must be obtained from relevant authorities within the NYSC before travelling.
General Ibrahim warned that any Corps member that embarks on unauthorised journey would henceforth be sanctioned.
“Don’t violate NYSC Bye-Laws. l urge you to take your security very serious. Shun cultism, cybercrime, drug addiction and ethnic bigotry,” the army General said.
He also charged Corps members to use the Orientation camp period to lay solid foundation for contribution to national unity and cohesion, while participating fully in all other cardinal programmes of NYSC.
“As Corps Members, you are to promote the unity, integration and peaceful co-existence of the country”, Ibrahim said.
He also counseled them on being disciplined, patriotic and serving as good ambassadors of their families and NYSC.
For the Director Director, Corps members must emulate their predecessors, who distinguished themselves in the fight against COVID-19 by producing facemasks, hand sanitizers, liquid soaps and disinfection chambers among other things.
A statement by Adenike Adeyemi (Mrs), Director of Press and Public Relations, NYSC said in urging them to always observe the COVID-19 safety protocols wherever they found themselves, General Ibrahim challenged Corps members to initiate and execute projects that would add value to their host communities and serve as legacies after their service year.
Furthermore, he urged them to strive towards becoming self-employed, especially by availing themselves of opportunities provided through the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme.
The press statement further quoted the Director General as saying; “Acquire entrepreneurial skills and respect the dignity of labour. Do not allow anyone to distract you, identify your talents and pursue your dreams with passion and be disciplined in your conduct.”
