  • Says AFCON victory over Egypt well deserved

Former Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has described the Super Eagles’ performance in their opening AFCON 2021 Group D victory over Egypt ‘as the best in recent years.’

Obviously proud of the impressive showing of Austin Eguavoen’s team in the 1-0 win over the Pharaohs in Garoua on Tuesday, Oliseh joined the country’s football enthusiasts in applauding Eagles’ overall dominance in the match.

The former international and 1994 AFCON winner was quite elated after Kelechi Iheanacho scored the only goal to humble the North Africans inside the Roumde Adjia Stadium.

Just like the forwards, the Nigeria midfielders and defenders were impressive as they stopped two-time African Footballer of the Year, Mohamed Salah, and his Egyptian teammates from penetrating the backline.

According to the former Ajax Amsterdam midfielder, Nigerians can start hoping for a fourth AFCON title and the first since 2013 with his former team Austin Eguavoen directing affairs of the team in Cameroon.

Though Iheanacho scooped the ‘Man of the Match’ prize at the end of the game, the 47-year-old Oliseh singled out Nantes winger, Moses Simon as another option for the award given his outstanding contributions in the attack.

Oliseh wrote on Twitter; “Technically, tactically, physically, mentally and whatever positive you can think of Eguavoen-led Super Eagles, I feel they dominated Egypt and it is the best Super Eagles performance in recent years.

“At this rate, we can be extremely optimistic my people. Moses Simon player of the match?”

Currently leading the Group D pack with three points, the Super Eagles battle Sudan in their next outing on Saturday, after the Falcons of Jediane claimed a goalless draw against Guinea-Bissau in their Tuesday’s opening match. – Goal.com report
