Oodua Youth Parliament Disowns Igboho’s Call For Secession
BY WILLIAMS ATTAH, GOMBE – The Oodua Youth Parliament (OYP), has distanced its members from the clamour for secession of the South Western States from Nigeria as spearheaded by Sunday Igboho.
Speaker of the OYP, Mr. Abdulmojeed Olademeji, stated the position of the group while conferring the title of “Mayegun” (Ambassador of Peace) on the Secretary to the Gombe State Government (SSG), Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi.
Olademeji said every country needs peace and as a youth pressure group, its members condemn anything that will not bring peace to Nigeria.
According to him; “You can check our statements, we are not in support of Sunday in demanding for Oodua nation out of Nigeria. We’re not in support, let’s sit down and discuss issues affecting insecurity in our country. That is our position”.
He said before any agitation, there should be plans on ground, saying that, “if you are demanding for a country, what are your demands? We must manage ourselves to move our country forward”.
Earlier, during the presentation, Olademeji described Professor Njodi as an icon of peace in this generation, adding that the unity of the country is not negotiable and therefore called on the youths to emulate the SSG’s peaceful disposition.
He said professor Njodi had always stood for peace and unity of this country wherever he is bestowed with public trust.
Responding, Prof Njodi, said he was elated by the conferment of the title of peace, more so that it is coming from the youths, who he described him as the hope and future of the country.
He admitted the failure of the older generation and commended the youths for discussing the bitterness of the past with their clamour for peace and unity of the country.
He challenged the youths to stand firm for the future greatness of the country noting, “as leaders of tomorrow, it is up to you to build or destroy this country’. He stressed however that “with this crop of youth, Nigeria’s future looks brighter”.
