Osun LG Crisis: NLC Directs Councils’ Workers To Remain At Home
Following the impasse created as a result of claims by both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the All Progressives Congress (APC), to the Local Government Councils in Osun State, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has directed members of staff in the 30 Councils to remain at home pending the resolution of the crisis.
This was as the NLC declared that its members shall not be cowed or intimidated even against the desperate attempts to silence them, stressing that they stand firm in their collective resolve to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law in the state.
Chairman of the NLC in the State, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, who gave the directive on Sunday, ordered that all workers in the 30 Local Government Councils should as a matter of security concerns, withdraw their services with immediate effect until the situation is under control. Governor Ademola Adeleke on Sunday, February 23, 2025, sworn-in newly elected Council chairmen and councillors that emerged victorious from the conduct of Saturday Local Government election, but directed them not to go to the secretariats due to the security situation.
A statement by Arapasopo titled; SAFETY OF OUR MEMBERS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE”, stated that the Osun chapter of the NLC resolved not to take chances by risking the lives of its members, thus, had to direct them to remain at home.
The NLC stated; “The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strongly affirm her earlier release notifying all Local Government Area Workers in the State to withdraw their services as a result of the political upheaval within their workplaces still subsist, while continuing in their prayers for the state.
“This release further reiterates that our member’s safety at work is of high priority, and we will not allow our members to work in an atmosphere of insecurity.
“The Osun State Council of the NLC remains resolute in its commitment to defending the rights and interests of workers and the masses.
“We shall not be cowed or intimidated by these desperate attempts to silence us. We stand firm in our resolve to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law in our beloved state,” NLC stated.
