Governor of Oyo State, Mr Seyi Makinde has declared that he will not descend low with the camp of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who are up in arms opposing the forthcoming National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party scheduled to take place in his state.
Wike, outrightly denied knowledge of the forthcoming convention, vehemently rejected the scheduled November 15 and 16, 2025 PDP National convention in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
But, speaking with journalists shortly after the Southern Zonal Consultative Meeting of the party held in Lagos, Governor Makinde said that when people go low of go into the gutters, he doesn’t go in with them.
In his words; “Personally, when people go low, or they go into the gutters, I don’t go with them. I allow them to find their bearing”.
The meeting tagged; ‘PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit’, was attended by Governors Makinde of Oyo State and Douye Diri of Bayelsa as well as Deputy Governor of Enugu, Mr. Ifeanyi Ossai, who represents Governor Peter Mba; Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, Senator Adelphus Wabara and former PDP Deputy National Chairman, Chief Olabode George
Others included, former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former governor of Ebonyi State, Dr Sam Egwu; former governor of Akwa Ibom Udom Emmanuel, Senator Ben Obi, former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Jumoke Akinjide, Dr Ali Odefa, Chief Emma Ogidi; Hon. Nnena Ukeje, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, among others.
The resolution of the meeting was however not made known to journalists, even as Governor Makinde said the decisions on zoning would be communicated to the National Executive Council of the party which is expected to meet next week Monday.
Makinde further said that the PDP is making concerted efforts to reach out to all aggrieved members in order to build a virile and united party that would serve as a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), emphasising that the calibre of people at the meeting was a strong indication that the PDP was not dead as being insinuated in some quarters.
In the words of Makinde; “I can disagree with people, but there shouldn’t be anything personal here. It should be about what are we giving to Nigerians because they are watching.
“In most other places of the 12 states, PDP came second in each of those. It’s some indication to us that if we continue to work hard, if we continue to strive hard, if we continue to bring our people together, we’ll get to a point where Nigerians will really start listening to us,” he said.
