PDP Presidential Contest: Tambuwal Bows Out For Atiku
- Wike’s camp kicks, watches unfolding events keenly
BY SEGUN ADEBAYO – In a move aimed at gifting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar an edge at the ongoing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention/Presidential primaries in Abuja, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has made a late withdrawal from the race.
Consequently, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives openly canvassed votes for Atiku, urging delegates and his supporters to support the Wazirin Adamawa aspirations for the party’s ticket.
Initially considered a strong ally of Rivers State Governor and presidential aspirant, Nyesom Wike following the unwavering support he received during the 2018 primaries held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the announcement by Tambuwal came as a shocker to most delegates inside the MKO National Stadium, Abuja.
“Time has come for us to make sacrifices in the interest of our party and our nation. I have come to the conclusion that I have to step down”, the Sokoto governor said.
Reacting to the development, a close aide of the Rivers State Chief Executive said nothing surprises their camp at this moment given the proverbial saying that ‘Birds of the same feathers flock together.’
Struggling not to betray his built-up emotions, the aide further volunteered; “We actually considered all possibilities and options available being in a political battle where intrigues and backstabbing remain the norm. But not in the least did we assume that Tambuwal would not only display such character let alone be unable to reciprocate the same gesture and undiluted support our principal gave him despite being berated by most people within the party.”
