Plateau Massacre: Declaration Of Emergency On Security Needed – David Mark Tells FG
Former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, has declared that it would not be out of place to declare an emergency on security in the country.
Senator Mark, who stated while condemning the pogrom on the eve of 2023 Christmas, said that any step taken to end the continued killing of citizens will be worth the trouble.
He therefore tasked the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to consider a critical review of the security architecture with a view to making it more proactive and strategic towards addressing the unbating insecurity challenges.
Senator Mark stressed that a review will identify the loopholes and devise a means to end the blood shedding, adding that the Plateau incidents in which scores of citizens were needlessly massacred should be a wakeup call that the security challenge needs urgent attention.
In the words of Mark; “It will not be out of place to declare an emergency on security. Any step taken to end the continued killing of citizens will be worth the trouble”.
The former President of the Senate therefore called on the government and security agencies to do more, saying that life has become so cheap in Nigeria today as if people have lost humanity in them.
The former two-term Senate President also implored the government to collaborate with subnational governments in the task of ensuing peace and security in the country.
Specifically, Mark commiserated with the government and people of Plateau state just as he suggested that residents should be alert and cooperate with security operatives in order to prevent reoccurrence.
The former chairman of the National Assembly called for harmonious relationship between and among various ethnic and religious adherences in the country.
A statement by Paul Mumeh, Media Adviser to Senator David Mark, said the former President of the Senate counselled against taking grievance to the extreme, stressing that “there are legitimate channels to address grievances instead resorting to self help”.
