The Ogun State Police Command says a 40-year-old man, Lekan Sunday is currently in its custody for allegedly raping a prophetess in a church in the state.

According to the Command, the suspect was apprehended on Monday, although he reportedly committed the crime last Thursday, October 12, 2023.

It was gathered that armed with weapons, the suspect allegedly broke into the Orioke Aanu Oluwa Gbohunmi Church in the Ilogbo Adu neighborhood of Kemta, Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

After forcefully entering the church building, Lekan reportedly held the Prophetess captive by flashing a knife in her face and threatening to kill her if she continued proving difficult and not letting him have his way.

Reports indicated that the victim desperately pleaded with the suspect to stop his criminal action but all her pleas fell on deaf ears, just as her cry for help and rescue from those nearby did not yield the expected results.

The reports further stated that after finally forcing the prophetess into submission and allegedly raping her, the victim managed to drag herself to a nearby police station to lodge her complaints. Having received the complaints, the police consequently launched a manhunt for the suspect who had fled the area after committing the alleged crime.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, was quoted as confirming the incident on Tuesday, saying that the prophetess recognised the suspect as a Mason and labourer in the area.

Odutola, who is a Superintendent of Police (SP), said; “The incident happened last Thursday. We arrested the suspect yesterday (Monday). The preliminary investigation into the matter is ongoing”.

Currently, security reports across the country indicate that Ogun now ranks among the states with a high level of crime and criminality nationwide.
