BY EDMOND ODOK – The Plateau State Police Command on Wednesday confirmed that some suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of retired AIG Christopher Dega, a security aide of Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

This is as Governor Ortom condemned the killing of Dega, describing it as a huge blow to his administration and the entire Benue state.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Gabriel Uba, who disclosed the development in a statement, said “Some suspects have been arrested” while the “investigation is on-going.”

The Police Spokesman, whose statement had confirmed the incident, said; “The Plateau State Police Command on a sad note received an ugly report of the death of AIG Christopher Dega (rtd).

On 31/05/2021 at about 2030hrs, AIG Christopher Dega (Rtd) was shot dead by three yet to be identified gunmen in an isolated restaurant at Bukuru, Jos.”

According to him; “From the investigation so far, it appeared that he was trailed and shot. He arrived at Jos from Makurdi on the same date at about 1930hrs.”

Police sources said reports available to the Command indicate that the late Security Chief was shot and killed around the Bukuru area of Jos South local government area of the State by some unidentified gunmen.

The sources said the Command is already working to unravel the possible mission of the Security aide in Plateau state where he was gunned down.

However, insiders hinted that late Dega’s visit to Jos may have been in connection with the ongoing public hearing of House of Representatives Committee on constitution review involving the residents of Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau States as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This is as Governor Ortom condemned the killing of Dega describing it as a huge blow to his administration and the entire Benue state.

Meanwhile, addressing journalists at Benue Peoples House, Makurdi on Wednesday, Governor Ortom said it is most painful that Dega was gunned down in such a gruesome manner.

Noting that the retired Police chief was very active even in retirement, the governor said; “Retired AIG Dega served with me here and this is someone who has retired but is not tired and was very active.

“So for him to have been murdered in the manner they did, a retired AIG gunned down. This is very sad.”

Governor Ortom lamented that the insecurity currently bedevilling all parts of the country would bring nothing good for the people, even as he challenged security agencies to find killers of his aide.

He sympathized with the family, friends and former colleagues of the deceased and prayed God to grant him eternal rest.
