Police Dismiss 6 Officers For Extortion, Resolve 589 Complaints

BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – The Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit (PCRRU) of the Nigeria Police Force on Monday said it has resolved about 589 complaints, representing over 90 per cent of 657 complaints lodged against the police across the country in the second quarter (Q2) of 2017.

It said the record showed a 17 per cent reduction in the number of complaints received in the second quarter of 2017 compared with same period in 2016.

These were contained in the 2017 Second Quarter (Q2) report released in Abuja and signed by ACP Abayomi Shogunle, head of the PCRRU. The report also indicated that complainants were satisfied with the outcomes arrived at by the PCRRU on their cases.

Shogunle said during the period under review, two traffic wardens found guilty of extortion in Abuja and four police officers also found guilty of extortion in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State were dismissed from service in line with the Inspector General of Police’s promise to flush out unethical officers and bad elements from the Nigeria Police Force.

Shogunle further said; ā€œA total sum of N265,000 extortion money was also recovered from dismissed officers and handed over to the rightful owners.

ā€œRegarding the sources of complaints, highest number of processed complaints came through telephone calls (454 cases) which represent 69 per cent of total complaints received. WhatsApp, SMS, BBM, Twitter, Facebook, Email jointly accounts for the remaining cases.

ā€œLagos, Rivers, and FCT Abuja top the state ranking with 137, 89 and 82 complaints respectively while Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, and Yobe State recorded no complaint from members of the public.ā€

He also said that the PCRRU agents also carried out series of face to face engagement with members of the public across the country during which PCRRU Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials were distributed to citizens.

Shogunle reminded members of the public that Bail is free, stressing that the PCRRU insists on ā€œNo To Impunity.ā€
