The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command is currently battling to unravel circumstances surrounding the death of Reverend Emeka Unaegbu, Presiding Pastor of Goodnews Power Assembly International, located along the Nyanya-Jikwoyi axis of Abuja.

Though the nation’s capital has been drowned in the heightened spate of killings by unknown gunmen, the police however claimed that Tuesday night’s incident may not be a case of murder by gunslingers.

According to an official statement by the Police Command, Rev Unaegbu was not killed by gunmen inside the church as widely reported.

Signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yusuf Mariam, the statement said; “The FCT Police Command wishes to debunk an erroneous publication being circulated in some sections of the social media insinuating that Pastor Evans Unaegbu ‘m’ was attacked and killed by gunmen at his worship centre along Jikwoyi axis.

“Contrary to this speculation, in prompt response to a distress call from a resident of Jikwoyi who resides near to the late pastor’s worship centre, a team of police detectives from Jikwoyi Division immediately visited the scene, where they found the late Pastor Evans in an unconscious state and took him to the hospital where the doctor certified him dead.”

The Police spokesperson’s statement also said preliminary investigations have not suggested any form of violence as no mark of violence or struggle was visible on his body.

It further explained that the FCT Commissioner of Police (CP), Bala Ciroma, has already ordered a thorough investigation to include an autopsy on the body to ascertain the true cause of death.

“He further urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, avoid circulating fake news and allow the law to take its cause”, Mariam said

Reports from eyewitness accounts had alleged that the pastor was conducting a lone vigil in his church when he was attacked by his assailants. And there are claims that the attack was, however, not discovered until the morning of Wednesday when the assailants had disappeared.

It was also gathered that Rev Unaegbu was barely alive when help eventually came his way and he finally gave up the ghost on the way to the hospital.

Meanwhile, news of the Pastor’s demise has thrown members of the church into confusion with most of them expressing shock over the incident.
