Policemen in Gov. Mohammed’s Convoy Involved in Accident
…Ten injured, one unconscious
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – One of the vehicles conveying 10 Police personnel of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) providing security cover for Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State got involved in a near fatal accident on Monday while on the convey of the Governor.
The vehicle, a Toyota Hilux pick-up van, RRS 3 driven by one Sabo, which 10 policemen, was in the process of overtaking other vehicles on the convoy in order to take a position in front but suddenly lost control and skidded off the road.
The vehicle which lost control and summersaulted with its four tyres facing the sky got badly damaged and left at the scene of the accident while the governor’s convoy continued its journey to Yelwan Duguri, the country home of Governor Mohammed.
The accident may have been caused as a result of the dust raised by the vehicles on the convoy of the governor which affected visibility on a road under construction which was being inspected.
Governor Mohammed, who was on inspection tour of ongoing projects across the state, plied the 62km Burga-Yelwan Duguri-Alkaleri road project to ascertain its level of completion when the accident happened.
Though there was no loss of lives, some of the police personnel sustained different degrees of injuries while one of them was believed to be unconscious.
They were all rushed to a nearby hospital in Bununu, headquarters of Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area for first aid treatment from where the badly injured were referred to Bauchi for better medical attention.
The Governor’s vehicle and most of the top government officials had gone far when the accident occurred thus were not nearby to offer any helping hand in the rescue mission.
However, the vehicle conveying Journalists and other vehicles in the convoy stopped immediately and participated in the rescue mission of the victims of the crash.
Similarly, other vehicles that include those of the Commissioners for Works and Transport and that of Information, also actively participated in the rescue operation as a joint efforts to return the vehicle back on its tyres.
