President Buhari Shocks APC’s NEC, Declares Tenure Extension Illegal

BY SEGUN ADEBAYO, ABUJA – President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday sent shock waves through the All Progressives Congress (APC) structures by declaring as illegal the recent tenure elongation approved for party officials at all levels across the country.

Pulling the carpet off the feet of shocked National Executive Committee (NEC) members of his party, the President called for the cancellation of tenure extension endorsed by the APC’s NEC meeting of February 28, 2018.

Making his stance known before the NEC meeting commenced on Tuesday, President Buhari told the packed hall at the APC national secretariat to consider upturning the tenure extension decision because “it is against the party constitution and the Nigerian constitution.”

In presenting the matter ‘for discussion’ at the meeting, the President Buhari said the  decision to distance himself from the tenure elongation was due to the fact that he would not want APC’s activities to be faulted by any court of law.

Forefront learnt that it was a totally shocked NEC members that received the President’s message given that the issue of tenure extension was not on the agenda circulated for the meeting.

More so, that the matter was not mentioned at the national caucus meeting held on Monday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The February 28, 2018 NEC meeting had extended the tenure of members of National Working Committee (NWC) led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun as well as the Party’s structures at the State, local government and ward levels by one year.

It was a decision that did not go down well with a national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who is said to have disagreements with the Party National chairman, Chief Odigie-Oyegun
