President Buhari Signs Police Bill 2020
BY EDMOND ODOK, ABUJA – President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law the Nigeria Police Bill, 2020 in a move aimed at re-engineering the Force for effective service delivery.
The presidential assent to the Bill was communicated to the National Assembly, through the Clerk of the legislature in a memo dated September 16, 2020.
Confirming the development in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said the newly assented Act repeals the Police Act Cap. P19. Laws of the Federation, 2004.
According to him, the new Act also provides for a more effective and well organized Police Force that is driven by the principles of transparency and accountability in its operations and management of its resources.
The president’s spokesman further said; “Among others, the Act establishes an appropriate funding framework for the Police in line with what is obtainable in other Federal Government key institutions, enhances professionalism in the Force through increased training opportunities.”
Adesina said in addition, the Act is meant to create “an enduring cooperation and partnership between the Police Force and communities in maintaining peace and combating crimes nationwide.”
