BY CHAMBERLAIN ODEY, JOS – Suspended chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in Plateau State, Mr. Damishi Sango, is likely to throw in the towel this week ahead of the work of the seven-man investigation committee set up to probe the allegations against him.

This is just as it is becoming clearer that he has been rejected by the stalwarts and followership of the party ahead of the conclusion of the investigation.

Analysts of politics and corporate governance are of the consensus that endorsement of the suspension of Sango and his deputy, Amos Gombi Gogol, by 65 of the 72-man State Executive Committee (SEC), is rather overwhelming, and passes for a massive ‘vote of no confidence’ on the suspended chairman and his deputy.

The analysts are of the view that if the duo should hold on or continue by any means, they would no longer enjoy the respect and confidence of their colleagues and the rest of the party members.

A meeting of the PDP SEC in Plateau State on Monday ratified and authenticated the processes of the suspension of Sango and his deputy by the members of the State Working Committee, and also approved the constitution of a probe committee to look into the allegations for which the suspended chairman alongside his deputy stand accused, and report same to the party latest by May 29, 2019.

On Monday evening, members of the State PDP Exco were at the residence of the PDP gubernatorial candidate in the 2019 general elections, Senator Jeremiah T. Useni, to brief him on the direction and basis for suspending Damishi Sango and Amos Gombi Gogol as chairman and deputy chairman of the party respectively.

Speaking to newsmen at the end of the meeting, the acting Chairman of the party, Mr. Chris Hassan, said it was important to brief the gubernatorial candidate on the state of affairs in the party.

According to him; “Sango attempted to make our cause to look like an effort to sabotage the chances of our gubernatorial candidate who is at the election tribunal in quest of justice and recovery of his stolen mandate.

“We are happy we have been able to put the facts and truth before Useni. He has listened to us and has been able to appreciate that ours is a struggle to save the soul of the party and secure our standing at the tribunal, and not a rebellion against the status quo just for the sake of factionalizing the party and worsen its fortunes”.

Hassan also said that the national secretariat of the party has already stepped into the matter, having authorised the Plateau Central zonal leadership of the party to broker talks with stakeholders and Executive of the party, adding that the State Executive was adamant.

In his words; “The meeting has no prospects to remedy the situation because Sango must go to safeguard the future and continuity of the PDP in Plateau state.”

A stakeholder and immediate past State chairman of the party, Mr. Raymond Dabo, in a chat with our reporter advised Sango to let go by resigning voluntarily, saying this is more so that he does not know the outcome of the investigation, and the likely course of action by the National Executive Committee (NEC).

As at Tuesday, an associate of the suspended Sango, told our reporter that the embattled chairman is being implored with calls by his associates and friends who are urging him to explore and straddle at the last straw of honour – which is to resign honorably and bring the ongoing investigation to naught.

The source further said that although Sango has been confused and glaringly troubled, his characteristic arrogance is likely to feed on the humble pie before the week runs out with a notice of resignation as Chairman of the PDP in Plateau state.
