A Chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Mr Buba Galadima, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of plotting to appoint a retired justice of the Appeal Court, known for corruption, dishonesty and unscrupulous practices, as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He warned that if the plan succeeds and scales through, Nigeria may have to forget the conduct of elections, stressing that the development would create chaos and possibly trigger a civil war.

Galadima, who stated these when he featured on Arise Television News on Monday, September 15, 2025, also raised serious concerns over governance, rule of law, and the integrity of elections in Nigeria.

Galadima specifically said the Government of President Tinubu was considering recruiting a retired Justice of the Appeal Court with a questionable and notorious reputation as Chairman of INEC.

In the words of Galadima; “Come November, there are rumours all over the place that this government is nominating a recently retired Court of Appeal justice who is known for notoriety to be the Chairman of INEC.

“I wish it is not true, because if that man becomes the Chairman of INEC, be assured that this government is inviting a civil war in this country.

“We cannot allow somebody that has a record of notoriety to be imposed on us as INEC chairman,” he insisted.

Galadima also accused the Tinubu-led administration of having no regard whatsoever for the rule of law, stressing that we cannot continue to remain a country where the government does not respect the law.

The NNPP chieftain also castigated the present leadership of INEC for compromising and becoming a department of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In the words of Galadima; “The INEC Chairman has already rigged the 2027 election for APC. They brought somebody that is the Secretary of the party that went to court for APC as acting national chairman, and he was rewarded with Chairman of INEC”.

He noted that such developments posed a direct threat to the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system, thus warned of dire consequences if the alleged plan goes ahead.

Galadima therefore called for vigilance among Nigerians, emphasising that the nation cannot afford to allow individuals with tainted records to oversee its democratic processes.
