Following criticisms that trailed what was considered indecorous, rude, and unparliamentary remarks last week made against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central), President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday tendered apology for the statement.
This was as Akpabio denied claims on the social media of his having “numerous girlfriends,” saying; “I have only one wife, and she is enough for me”.
The Senate President’s apology followed the criticisms of Akpabio by the Voices for Inclusion and Equity for Women (VIEW) over what they described as gutter language and disrespect towards female Senators by Akpabio.
Akpabio, had last week told Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) not to speak on the floor of the Senate as if she was in a “night club.”
Akpabio made the comment after Akpoti-Uduaghan spoke without being recognised by the Senate President.
However, Akpabio, who expressed remorse on Tuesday at plenary, said that he would not intentionally denigrate any woman.
He said; “I will not intentionally denigrate any woman, and I always pray that God will uplift women.”
He addressed Akpoti-Uduaghan directly, saying, “Distinguished Senator Natasha, I want to apologise to you. The interest shown on social media shows that we have enemies. I felt I should tender a public apology to you. I do not mean any harm.”
