Ronaldo Bags ‘Player Of The Century’ Award
Outfoxes Messi, 2 others for top prize
As expected, Portuguese striker, Cristiano Ronaldo, on Sunday outwitted three other top contenders, for the ‘Player of the Century’ crown at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai.
Argentine and FC Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, Liverpool and Egyptian star, Mohamed Salah and former Brazilian international and two time FIFA Player of the Year, Ronaldinho were others shortlisted for the award.
The Juventus forward was at the well-attended awards ceremony to personally receive the top prize
Appreciating the organisers for honouring him with the award, the five times World footballer of the year winner, said; “Thank you, to everyone who voted for me, to my family, to my mother and sisters.”
Ronaldo further said; “It is an exceptional achievement. It gives me the motivation to move forward.
“To be named the best is a great honour, I hope that this situation is over next year and that we can have more fun, thank you very much. I hope to still be able to play for more years.”
It was indeed a memorable night for the 35-year-old Portuguese who also received the ‘Agent of the Century’ award on behalf of his agent and compatriot, Jorge Mendes.
Bayern Munich and Poland’s striker, Robert Lewandowski was named the player of the year in what held an astounding evening for his German club.
Hansi Flick received the coach of the year prize and Bayern Munich was named the club of the year, after a season that included winning the Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles.
Real Madrid was recognised as the ‘Club of the century’ while Pep Guardiola was voted ‘Coach of the Century’, having won eight league titles with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City, as well as two Champions League titles with Barcelona.
Gracing the ceremony with his presence was FIFA President, Gianni Infantino who was called upon to present trophies and awards to several of the winners.
Also known as the Dubai d’Ors, the Globe Soccer Awards are yearly given for excellence in football. It is organised annually as an official Gala Dinner by Silva International Investments and Tommaso Bendoni.
On this occasion, leading footballing names from all the continents attend the award ceremony which is broadcast live on many TV networks. – With agency reports
