Rotary Club Honours Ekweremadu As ‘Outstanding Citizen of the World Year 2017’

BY RAPHAEL ONYEKACHUKWU, ENUGU – The Enugu City Centre Rotary, District 9142 is to confer on the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator  Ike Ekweremadu, the award of ‘Outstanding Citizen of the World Year 2017’ in recognition of his contributions and service to humanity.

District President, Mr Okezie Nwanjoku, who announced this at press briefing in Enugu, said the award would be conferred on Chief Ekweremadu on Saturday, December 2, 2017.

Nwanjoku said that 150 people were shortlisted across the globe for the honour, adding that after a vigorous and thorough scrutiny of the nominees, Ekweremadu was unanimously adopted for the award as an outstanding citizen.

According to him, the award is meritoriously earned and not influenced by wealth or primordial considerations, adding that; “If one of the members had vetoed the choice, then there will be no award. The committee was unanimous in its decision.”

He mentioned Chief Arthur Eze as the 2015 award winner, explaining that candidates nominated for 2016 award were all vetoed by members of the Award Planning Committee.

Also, the District President said the award ceremony will be used to unveil the club’s over N50 million service projects for 2017/2018.

Nwanjoku said the club would raise the funds to tackle issues around its six pillars of; peace and conflict resolution as well as disease prevention and water sanitation projects.

Others are maternal and child mortality; basic education and economic empowerment of indigent people.
