Sadly, ASUU Extends Strike By 3 Months

BY TEMI OHAKWE, ABUJA – Frustration for Nigerian students continues on the centre stage as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday extended its rollover strike by another three months.
Accusing the government of being insensitive to the worsening situation in the nation’s education sector, the Universities’ teachers said it is unfortunate that none of the agreements reached has been implemented.
Speaking with Voice of Nigeria (VON), ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke confirmed the extension on Monday and berated the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige for stopping the salaries of ASUU members.
He said the development is even more painful because salary payments have been approved for other unions in the university that are also on strike currently.
The ASUU President said they were extending the industrial action because the government has refused to address all the burning issues on the table for discussion.
The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajuiba had last week insisted that the government believes it does not make sense for lecturers to continue receiving salaries without working for it.
