BY ALIJO SYLVESTER, ABUJA – After weeks of dilly dallying, the Senate on Wednesday confirmed nine nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari that are expected to serve as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Their confirmation of the RECs followed the submission and presentation of their screening by the Chairman, Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Suleiman Nazif at plenary.
The confirmed nominees include Baba Abba Yusuf – Borno, Mr. Segun Agbaje – Ekiti, Elder Monday Udom Tom – Akwa Ibom, Mr. Eric Olawale – Osun, Dr. Uthman Abdulrahman – Kwara, Dr. Cyril Omorogbe –Edo, Mallam Yahaya Bello – Nasarawa, Dr. Emmanuel Alex Hart – Rivers and Mallam Mohammed Magaji Ibrahim – Gombe
President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki thanked the INEC Committee for what he described as “detailed screening of the nominees.”
In a related development, the report of the joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on the reordered elections was read on the floor of the Senate and almost led to an uproar of some members of the upper chamber opposed to the conduct of the presidential election as last on the election timetable.
