Senate Confirms Onnoghen As CJN
The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Justice Walter Onnoghen as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
After the confirmation hearing that took place in the upper chamber of the National Assembly during which the Acting CJN fielded questions from lawmakers, the senators voted and confirmed Onnoghen.
According to Senate President Bukola Saraki, “We are enlightened by some of the views presented today.”
Describing the confirmation of Justice Onnoghen as a milestone, Saraki thanked the senators for asking wide range of questions. At a stage of the confirmation screening, Onnoghen pleaded with the lawmakers to be excused from commenting on why confirmation for his nomination was delayed. He also declined to comment on the current trial of judges over alleged cases of corruption.
