VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – An Islamic scholar, Sheikh Mohammed Bn Yahaya has warned against what he described as “the continuing neglect and failure of parents to instill proper values in the children and younger ones”.

Sheikh Bn Yahaya noted that the development is increasing corruption, insecurity and social vices in the society.

He therefore urged Muslims and other Nigerian parents to increase their investment in the upbringing of their children towards ensuring a more prosperous society and better secured future.

Sheikh Bn Yahay, who gave the warning and appeal on Sunday when delivering a lecture at the Al-Habbibiya Muslim Society in Abuja, further said; “Let us inject values into the hearts of the young because of their flexibility and because they are still impressionable.

“Our value system has also changed. We have people who are honoured in the society just because of how rich they are, thereby sending wrong signals that money must be acquired at all costs. This has to change”, he warned.

Quoting copiously from the Quran, Sheikh Bn Yahaya said the discretion in committing crimes has also been eroded, adding that people now arrogantly commit crimes and even boast about it and date others.

According to him; ”Our problem now is we commit crimes openly which goes against the teaching of the prophet Muhammad.“

He explained that while he is not discountenancing the role of prayers in the upbringing of children, he however said that hard work and commitment was also important

He said the anti-corruption fight of the government should be viewed not just as an immediate action but one that has long term implication for peace and security of the country.

Earlier, the chief Imam Fuad Adeyemi said the Federal Government anti-corruption fight needs everyone to do his bit in different areas of the society for Nigeria to be better.

Adeyemi also said corruption had become endemic and only the fear of Allah and obedience to His law can bring lasting end it.
