Six-Goal Blitz: Narrow Escape As Nigeria Survive Tie-Breaker Drama To Reach WAFCON Q-Finals

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have qualified for the quarter-finals round of the ongoing 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament in Morocco after a commanding 6-2 victory over the Female Pharaohs of Egypt in their final Group C match at the Rabat Olympic Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Super Falcons went into the match knowing they could not afford another slip after their shock opening defeat by Malawi and narrow win over Zambia and they responded with their most ruthless attacking performance of the tournament, scoring three times in each half to secure qualification alongside Malawi.

Forward Asisat Oshoala gave the Super Falcons an early lead from the penalty spot in the 21st minute while impact substitute Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 45th minute.However, the Egyptians responded strongly as they pulled a goal back via a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time, ending the half 2-1 in favour of Nigeria.

The second-half surge saw the Super Falcons dominating play as they scored four more goals to secure a commanding 6-2 victory at the Stade Olympique de Rabat.

In the other Group C encounter, Malawi booked their place in the quarter-finals despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Zambia in their final match. The closing stages of the match were evenly contested as both sides created chances, with Zambia continuing to push forward despite holding the lead as goal difference tie-breaker became a crucial factor.

Kabange Mupopo came within inches of adding a third for Zambia late on, only to see her close-range effort come off the woodwork with the goalkeeper beaten. The final whistle confirmed the Scorchers progression despite the loss, while the Copper Queens see their Morocco 2026 campaign come to an unfortunate end.

Group C Implications

Interestingly, Nigeria’s high scoring performance against Egypt did not count as the Super Falcons joined the Scorchers of Malawi to qualify for the quarter-finals from Group C, while Zambia was eliminated despite finishing level on the same six points as the two top teams following the final group matches played on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

With the trio of Malawi, Nigeria, and Zambia all tied on six points, CAF’s head-to-head tie-breaker rules were applied. Having tied on head-to-head points, the head-to-head goal difference was used and Malawi came tops of the Group on the tie-break criteria, scoring the most goals (four (4) goals) in the matches played among the three tied teams. Nigeria came second with (three (3) goals), leaving Zambia in third place with (two (2) goals).
