Understanding What CAF’s Regulations Actually Say
Article 74.2 of the CAF competition regulations explains how teams are separated when three or more sides finish level on points. The existing regulations rank teams in this order:
i. Points obtained in matches between the tied teams
ii. Goal difference in matches between the tied teams
iii. Goals scored in matches between the tied teams
If only two teams remain tied, the above criteria are applied again to those two teams. Only then is overall goal difference considered. Finally, overall goals scored are used if necessary. The Deciding Mini-League
CAF effectively creates a mini-league using only the matches played between Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia. Those matches were:

Nigeria would still finish above Zambia and qualify for the quarter-finals. In fact, Nigeria could have beaten Egypt 1-0, 2-1 or even 10-0, and the qualification outcome would not have changed, because the head-to-head criteria had already separated the three teams before overall goal difference was ever considered.

CAF’s approach is designed to reward teams based on their performances against their direct rivals rather than encouraging teams to run up the score against the weakest side in the group.
The seemingly lopsided nature of football tournament mathematics often produces baffling outcomes, which is precisely why Zambia’s dominant 6-0 thrashing of Egypt was ultimately rendered inconsequential. In a standard league format, such a resounding victory would heavily tilt the scales of goal difference in Zambia’s favor, virtually guaranteeing them an advantage.
However, given the specific tournament structure and tie-breaking procedures, the massive margin of victory became a footnote. Instead, the fewer, hard-fought goals exchanged exclusively between Nigeria and Malawi carried far more mathematical weight, dictating the final standings and leaving Zambia’s masterclass out of the qualification picture.
