The Sokoto State Government has indefinitely shut down the Musa Lukuwa Jumu’at Mosque in Mabera, Sokoto metropolis, following the recent deadly attack on the worship centre.
In a swift response to the unfortunate development, the state government has officially designated the premises as a active crime scene that will remain closed until further notice, while also constituting a special committee of Islamic scholars (Ulamas) to investigate both the immediate and underlying causes of the violence.
Additionally, the panel is tasked with recommending strict and appropriate measures to prevent a recurrence and possible security breaches at religious sites in the future.
The closure and subsequent investigation into the killing at the mosque was announced by Director General of Media and Publicity for the Government House, Abubakar Bawa in a statement issued on Tuesday, saying that the committee would examine the circumstances surrounding the tension and make further recommendations in the overall interest of peace and stability in the state.
Also, the state government dissociated itself from any person, irrespective of status, who hides under the pretext of religion to undermine or disrespect Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), his parents, household and companions.
While reaffirming its “total obedience and respect” for the Prophet, his parents, household and companions, the government urged residents to continuously to show love and compassion to him, even as it appealed the members of the public to desist from making inciting statements capable of jeopardising the peaceful coexistence for which Sokoto is known.
Meanwhile, Sokoto is on high alert as the government assured of its commitment to protect the lives and property of every citizen in the state.
Forefront News recalled that tensions reached a breaking point in the state capital after attackers targeted Islamic cleric Malam Musa Lukuwa, stabbing him shortly after he concluded leading the Jumu’at prayer at his mosque.
