BY SEGUN ADEBAYO, ABUJA – An unidentified Muslim cleric has threatened to kill Dr. Matthew Hassan of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese over his call that killers of the female student of Sokoto College of Education, Deborah Samuel, be brought to book.

The threat to take the life of the Catholic Bishop was contained in a viral video clip trending on social media platforms where the Muslim preacher swore they would soon murder the respected cleric.

According to the translation of the message spoken in less than a minute Hausa language, the preacher described the Bishop as leaders of the pagans in Sokoto State: “The pagans’ leader of Sokoto state, Matthew Hassan Kukah, is said to have said something that I read on Facebook. Let him continue. I swear we shall kill him. We are not joking.

“Let him continue. We must kill him. Let us desist from talking on this matter (killing of Deborah). She abused the prophet and may God bless the people who delivered instant judgement on her.

“Of course, there were mistakes because those sent did things they were not supposed to do. After being killed for abusing the prophet, why then engage in burning down property?”

Bishop Kukah, in a statement he personally signed, shortly after the murder last Thursday May 12, 2022, called on relevant authorities to fish out the perpetrators without delay. He said those who carried out the attack must be punished according to the law of the country, saying the matter must be treated as a criminal case.

Murdered Deborah Samuel

“I have received with deep shock the incident that occurred in the Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto State leading to the gruesome murder of Miss Deborah Yakubu, a 200-level Home Economics student today

“We condemn this incident in the strongest terms and call on the authorities to investigate this tragedy and ensure that all the culprits are brought to book.

“The only obligation that is owed her immediate family, her fellow students and the school authority is the assurance that those who are guilty of this inhuman act, no matter their motivation, are punished according to the law of the land.

“Christians have lived peacefully with their Muslim neighbours in Sokoto over the years. This matter must be treated as a criminal act and the law must take its cause”, the statement said.
