Human rights activist and leader of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore on Saturday morning at the Lagos City Marathon, was physically and brutally attacked by suspected thugs allegedly affiliated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
It was gathered that Sowore, who in 2023 contested for the presidency on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC), was participating in the marathon alongside his team when suddenly some thugs emerged from no where and started attacking him and members of his team.
The development led to an erupted indiscriminate violence as the thugs not only targeted Sowore and his team but also assaulted journalists who were present to document the event.
As a result, many individuals suffered injuries, just as equipment belonging to some of the journalists; including cameras and other essential tools were in the process vandalized in the chaos.
One of the distressing videos that was streamed showed the brutal nature of the assault and also revealed thugs physically attacking Sowore, his crew, and the journalists.
In another of the videos which was quite disturbing, a thug was seen gripping the neck of a journalist mercilessly in an attempt to grab a camera from the journalist thereby put the life of the journalist in grave danger.
The reason for the unwarranted violent attacks by the APC thugs against Sowore and the journalists remains unclear, thereby raising serious concerns about the safety of participants at what was intended to be a celebration of community and athleticism.
Efforts to get reaction from the Lagos Police Command were unsuccessful, as its Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, did not respond to calls.
