BY EDMOND ODOK – With the 2027 general elections looming large in the horizon, a federal lawmaker, Representative Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere has issued a rallying cry to Nigeria’s fractured opposition, demanding an immediate ceasefire to “unnecessary” internal attacks threatening to tear them to shreds.
Pointedly appealing to the Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) to focus on building unity across party lines, Ugochinyere said only a unified front, free from self-sabotage and petty bickering, can provide the democratic muscle needed to challenge the status quo and safeguard the nation’s political future.
Ahead of the 2027 election, the member representing Ideato North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has called on opposition political parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), and Labour Party (LP), to stop unnecessary internal attacks and focus on building unity capable of strengthening democratic opposition in the country.
Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, described the growing culture of public bickering, accusations, and needless confrontations among opposition figures as childish and counterproductive.
He said the current situation of things in the country demands that all well-meaning stakeholders must shun divisive tendencies and embrace values that strengthens democratic opposition for the overall good of ordinary citizens.
In a press statement on Thursday in Abuja, Ugochinyere, who is the founder of Action People’s Party (APP), said: “This is not the time for unnecessary fights and media attacks against one another. Nigerians expect the opposition to provide direction, hope, and credible alternatives, not endless quarrels that weaken collective strength.”
According to him, it is time that personal interests and ego-driven politics give way to cooperation, dialogue, and strategic alliance-building in the interest of Nigeria and the people.
While challenging leaders and members of opposition parties to concentrate on issues affecting Nigerians, including insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and governance challenges, rather than dissipating energy on internal divisions, the outspoken lawmaker said unity remained the strongest weapon for any political movement seeking to inspire confidence among citizens and deepen democratic values.
Additionally, the former President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) said: “The people are watching. What Nigerians want to see is maturity, unity, and a common purpose.
“Opposition politics should not become a battlefield of insults and bitterness.”
