Tokyo 2020: Here we come!

BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI, ABUJA – For picking the Tokyo 2020 Olympics ticket in far away Belgrade, Serbia, President Muhammadu Buhari has charged Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress, to sparkle and dazzle at the forthcoming greatest sporting carnival on earth.

The Presidential charge is contained in a commendation message to the team; team officials; and the National BasketBall Federation (NBBF) for qualifying to be part of the global fiesta.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina in Abuja on Monday, President Buhari said the Nigerian team, as reigning African champion, had all it takes to make a global impact.”

According to Adesina, “President Muhammadu Buhari felicitates with female Basket Ball team, D’Tigress, for qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, urging them to remain focused, determined and energized for a good outing at the tournament.

“President Buhari commends the sportsmanship and resilience of the team all through the qualifying stages, and in their trainings, saluting their courage in always putting out their best as they represent the country.

“Being the current African Champions, President Buhari believes the D’Tigress already has the talents that could make global impact in the sport, assuring that the Federal Government would ensure proper preparation and mobilization for all outings.”

“The President also commends team officials and the National Basket Ball Federation (NBA) for the discipline and motivation of the D’Tigress,” the statement said.

Despite losing 70-63 to host Serbia and 76- 71 to world Champions, United States of America (USA) in their final match, the D’Tigress joined their male counterparts, D’Tigers in qualifying for Basketball event of Tokyo 2020 Olympic games

With this development, Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has set an enviable record of being the first federation in the country that will be featuring both male and female teams at the Tokyo Olympics.
