BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The Police Command in Cross River has warned that tough times await electoral offenders in the State as preparations enter top gear for the 2023 general elections.

According to the State Police Commissioner, CP Sule Balarabe, overzealous political miscreants involved in various electoral infractions such as thuggery and violence would not be spared the wrath of the law.

CP Balarabe, who was briefing newsmen on the Command’s level of preparedness with campaigns for the polls now in full swing across the State, said the Police force would live up to expectations in ensuring a successful and hitch-free election.

He said though one cannot rule out a situation where some criminal elements may seek to disrupt the electoral process, the Command would be ready to nip such ugly developments in the bud.

The Police boss urged candidates, their supporters, party leaders, and relevant stakeholders to always play by the rules as the Force would not condone any form of political indiscretion or other criminal acts.

CP Balarabe also tasked youths in the State to shun all forms of social vices and acts capable of disrupting public peace before, during, and after the elections.

Balarabe, who has just resumed as the new Police Commissioner in Cross River, lauded the Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) for its visionary approach to issues of partnership engagements with agencies of government and pledged to collaborate with the Union on effective crime control mechanisms in the State.

He noted that Cross River being a tourism destination in the country, it is important to ensure effective collaboration between the media and security agencies towards ensuring that criminal elements activities are not allowed to endanger the economic potentials of a massive festival like the popular annual Calabar carnival.

Earlier in his remarks, the State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Nsa Gill commended the Police Command for its timely intervention in putting effective surveillance mechanisms in crime red-hot zones across the State.
