Triennial Conference: NUJ Cautions Against Unguarded Comments On Security

BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – The National Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Wednesday cautioned its members to be properly guided on issues of security and not to be swayed by reckless comments and insinuations.

This was as it assured that it would continue to monitor security issues across the country to enable members travelling from various states to Umuahia to be adequately informed.

The NUJ in a statement by it National Secretary, Mr Shuaibu Leman, specifically said that it would ensure that all the relevant security organisations are fully briefed about its forthcoming Triennial Delegates Conference scheduled to take place in Umuahia in order to make certain that delegates are properly secured.

According to Leman; “The National Secretariat has taken note of the concern being expressed by some members about issues of insecurity ahead of the National Delegates Conference in Umuahia, Abia State.

“Specifically, our attention has been drawn to the views expressed by the Vice President, Zone C, Petrus Obi in a Press Statement, yesterday, August 24, 2021, that Abia State is not safe for delegates that will be coming for the 7th Triennial Conference.

“We have also taken proper note of the assurances given by other officers of the Zone and State Councils.

No doubt, the issue of insecurity in Nigeria has reached alarming proportions and citizens are daily living in fear because of this, however, it is our belief that isolating one particular State as insecure is not helpful.

“For us as a union, the safety and security of our members is a priority issue which cannot be compromised,” Leman said.
