  • Retools lawsuit to get back on platform

Former President Donald Trump on Monday asked a United States (US) Appeals Court to revive his lawsuit against Twitter over his permanent suspension from the platform.

According to Reuters, Trump, who was banned from Twitter over his role in the attack on the US Capitol on 6 January 2021, is seeking the Court to declare the action null and void given that it was an abuse of his rights.

Also taken off indefinitely from YouTube and Facebook after the incident, Trump had sued Twitter, over what he described as “censorship”

While other social media organisations have not decided whether the former president can return to their folds, the ban on Twitter was meant to be permanent.

After billionaire Elon Musk bought Twitter last month, questions were raised about whether that ban would be reversed. This is against the backdrop that Musk had previously said banning Trump had been “a mistake”.

However, the billionaire is yet made any public decisions about whether to allow Trump’s return, stating that he may leave such policy decisions to an independent board. In one of his tweets, Musk said he would introduce a “council’ that would take a decision on whether Donald Trump would be allowed back.

The former President was fiercely critical of Twitter when he was banned, supposedly for life. After the Capitol Hill riots, Twitter said the permanent suspension was “due to the risk of further incitement of violence”.

But with the new owner, that “permanent” suspension now looks a lot less certain and the Appeal Court may well give him the much-desired breather. – With Agency reports
