Unpaid Salaries: NUJ Warns Leadership Newspapers
BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – Following months of unpaid salaries to members of staff, sacks without compensation amongst others, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Friday wrote the management of Leadership Newspapers to consider a peaceful resolution of the nagging issues as not to tamper with the subsisting industrial harmony between it and the Union.
In a strongly worded letter addressed to the Group Managing Director, Leadership Newspapers, Utako, Abuja, the NUJ said it was constraint to write the newspapers organisation requesting an urgent intervention in clearing its members’ arrears of salaries that had accumulated for more than eight (8) months now.
The letter, signed by the NUJ National Secretary, Malam Shu’aibu Usman Leman, urged the management of Leadership Newspapers to do the needful to ensure that the waiting and anxiety of members of the Union is appreciated by the management of the newspapers.
Usman further said: “In the interest of industrial peace in the media sector, good labour relations and justice, you will do the needful to ensure that the waiting and anxiety of our members in your organization all this while without recourse to any action is very well noted and appreciated by management.
“We have also noted that some of our members that you either sacked or frustrated into resigning have not been paid their entitlements. This must be done immediately.
“Our Demands: Consequent to this, we wish to make a final demand to you to consider a peaceful resolution of the nagging issue so as not to tamper with the subsisting industrial harmony between your organization and the NUJ.”
