A United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has given the assurance that the administration of President Donald Trump will closely monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
He emphasised that developments in Nigeria remain important to the US administration, thus would continue to receive attention as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.
Moore, a Republican congressman representing West Virginia, further stated that the credibility of the polls remains a key issue for Washington.
The congressman who stated these during an interview with NoireTV, emphasised that the US government would pay close attention to how Nigeria conducts its next nationwide elections.
He further said that both the US administration and members of Congress will be observing the electoral process and its outcome.
In the words of Moore; “We are going to be watching how the elections are conducted, how they unfold and the overall process. It’s something the administration and I will be following very closely”.
He also said that the US House of Representatives was considering an appropriations bill containing provisions relating to Nigeria, particularly on religious freedom and future security cooperation between both countries.
According to Moore, the proposed legislation included measures aimed at addressing the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, as well as conditions that could affect US security assistance to the Nigerian government.
The congressman said that the bill contains provisions he helped introduce, saying that if passed into law, it would shape aspects of future US-Nigeria relations.
Moore assured that he would continue discussions with the Trump administration on Nigeria-related issues, adding that he was scheduled to meet President Trump alongside other members of Congress.
