BY EDMOND ODOK – The Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Bako Lalong has challenged the Organised Labour to recognise Nigeria’s economic realities in demanding improved welfare conditions for workers and the ordinary Nigerians.

Lalong said with the country witnessing teething challenges, marked by industrial actions and unrest that have adversely affected the economy, it is urgently important for Labour to re-think its planned strike.

The Minister, accompanied by the Minister of State, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyeajeocha, made the submission in Abuja on Monday while meeting with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to address issues raised by Labour and its threat of an impending total strike nationwide.

According to him; “We must also recognise the economic realities that confront us. As we address the concerns of the workforce, we must be mindful of striking a balance that promotes economic growth and secures sustainable progress for our nation.

“Today I call on you to join hands in an open-minded and constructive dialogue, enabling us to bridge any gaps that may exist between the interests of workers and the ultimate goal of driving economic advancement”.

The Minister told the NLC delegation led by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero that the Government has noted the genuine concerns raised by the Organised Labour which are receiving attention.

He assured that the government is ever ready to closely examine the demands of Labour and consider issues that can be resolved immediately, those that will require time and others which need further discussions.

He expressed confidence that continuous engagement by all stakeholders would produce resolutions meant to propel the labour sector forward and generate harmonious collaboration between the Government and NLC to facilitate an environment where the workforce thrives.

Reacting to the Minister’s comments, the NLC President, Comrade Ajaero said the Labour Movement has met with the government severally and put its demands on the table which have regrettably not been addressed.

He said though the workers have continued to experience hardships due to the fuel subsidy removal, yet, there are no palliatives, wage awards, or proposed review of minimum wage as promised by the government.

Similarly, the NLC President condemned the breach of the NURTW Headquarters by some imposters trying to take over the Union’s leadership illegally.

While lamenting that the police have not only closed the NURTW’s Secretariat but also arrested its members who are still in detention, Comrade Ajaero demanded their immediate release in the interest of peace and justice.
